A brass slider will allow adjusting up to about 2 inches and is a good idea. A one piece construction will have a smooth surface and is good for formal collars. Grenadines have a textured surface and sliders don't always work smoothly with grenadines.

Width is measured at the widest part of the tie there are no rules for the best width, it should be based on your body size and your personal preference. It is a sartorial myth that you should match your tie width to your jacket lapels.
