This color pairing and spot size ( dot in the USA) was worn as bandana by Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, the bowtie favorite of Churchill and RAF pilot's silk scarves in WW2. Fighter pilots left their top tunic buttons open and scarf loose. This wasn't to look dashing, but because they were sitting behind a Rolls Royce engine generating lots of cockpit heat unlike multi engine pilots freezing. It still looks good sans hills or airplanes.
